TV Show

Indian television back in the 90s had rib-tickling shows. Comedy then was not much about standup shows, but the script and the witty characters held it together. If you're a '90s kid, watching any of these shows will give you a heavy dose of nostalgia.

They say if you want to know an era, then watch their content. Most of these shows dealt with genuine issues of the common man but presented it with a pinch of salt (aka humour). Funny shows with an underlying message were the theme of that decade; one could never watch a show without a meaningful takeaway.

So if you were not old enough to watch these in the '90, or for some reason missed these television gems, we've shortlisted five of the best Hindi sitcoms of the '90s that you can binge-watch now.

1. Dekh Bhai Dekh
The minute someone mentions this series, the title song rings in my ears-Is rang badalti duniya mein, kya tera hai kya mera hai, dekh bhai dekh… har shaam ke baad savera hain! The cast comprised firecracker talent in the face of Farida JalalShekhar SumanNavin NischolBhavana BalsavarDeven Bhojani and a few others. The show depicted a crazy rollercoaster ride of the Diwan family with its three generations in an ancestral house in the Mumbai suburbs. It had the nuances of day-to-day issues of a family, their relationships, troubles, joys and happiness.

2. Office Office

The show showcases the life of a common man Mussadilal played excellently by Pankaj Kapoor and his tribulations with corruption. Nothing much has changed in the last two decades, back-and-forth trips to a government office for gas or electricity connection remains to be a common unsolved problem—a satirical comedy dealing with everyday dilemmas in the best way possible.

3. Zabaan Samabhalke

The Indian version of Mind Your Language starring the multi-talented Pankaj Kapoor and his fellow actors. The show is about an engineer who has to teach Hindi to a bunch of people from different parts of the world. And each character is so well written and earnestly performed that you can't stop watching once you start.

4. Tu Tu Main Main

TV Show

A hilarious show that exhibits the love and hate relationship between a daughter-in-law (Supriya Pilgaonkar) and mother-in-law (Reema Lagoo). Those were the blissful days where saas-bahu soaps were projected in a tongue-in-cheek manner, instead of the endless, unrealistic dramas we're bombarded with today.

5. Idhar Udhar

If you are star-struck by the characters of Maya and Hansa, then you've got to take a look at their earlier shows. Idhar Udhar tells us a story of Sunita (Ratna Pathak) and Poonam (Supriya Pathak) the former as an air hostess and the latter as an ad executive together sharing an apartment in Mumbai. The show was way ahead of its time, showcasing independent women and their adulting journey filled with comedy, and lightheartedness.
