A year after he sacrificed his life in the Pulwama attack in Kashmir, Nitika Kaul Dhoundiyal, the widow of martyred Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, has cleared the Short Service Commission (SSC) exam and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. She is now waiting for the merit list. Dhoundiyal will be joining the Officers Training Academy (OTA) at Chennai in April this year and after 11 months of training, she will join the Indian Army as a commissioned officer.

According to her, this is the most befitting tribute she can give to her husband who died in an exchange of fire with terrorists in February, last year.

Nitika filled out the SSC form six months after her husband’s martyrdom and says that this is her way of dealing with the loss and finding a way to heal. She told a news portal, “When I wrote the exam and gave the interview, I could feel what he would have felt when he wrote his SSC.” She is currently working with a Noida-based MNC and once the merit list is out, she will quit the corporate job and join the Armed Forces.

Major Dhoundiyal, 34, posted with 55 Rashtriya Rifles was killed in an anti-insurgency operation on February 18 last year, days after a car bomb attack in Pulwama killed 40 paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force personnel. He had been married only for nine months when the tragedy struck.

The Indian Army recently relaxes the age limit for the widows of the soldiers, Currently, for widows of defence personnel, the age limit is 35 years.
